Names of the Prophets: Meanings & Stories

Allah sent prophets to every nation throughout human history. The Quran mentions 25 of them by name, each carrying a message of guidance and a name rich in meaning. Naming your child after a prophet is among the most beloved naming traditions in Islam.

"We have sent you as a mercy to all the worlds." (Quran 21:107)

The 25 Prophets Named in the Quran

1. Adam (ุขุฏู…) โ€” Earth / Mankind

The first human and first prophet. Allah created him with His own hands and breathed His spirit into him. He was taught the names of all things and sent to earth as the first khalifah.

2. Idris (ุฅุฏุฑูŠุณ) โ€” Studious / Learned

Known for his wisdom and devotion, Allah raised him to a high station. Many scholars identify him with Enoch of the Biblical tradition.

3. Nuh (ู†ูˆุญ) โ€” Rest / Consolation

The great flood prophet who called his people for 950 years. He built the ark by Allah's command and preserved life on earth. Surah 71 is named after him.

4. Hud (ู‡ูˆุฏ) โ€” Guidance

Sent to the mighty people of 'Ad in ancient Arabia. When they rejected him, Allah destroyed them with a violent wind. Surah 11 bears his name.

5. Salih (ุตุงู„ุญ) โ€” Righteous / Virtuous

Sent to the people of Thamud, who carved their homes from mountains. Allah sent a she-camel as a sign; when they killed it, destruction followed.

6. Ibrahim (ุฅุจุฑุงู‡ูŠู…) โ€” Father of Nations

The Khalilullah โ€” close friend of Allah. He smashed idols, was thrown into fire (which Allah made cool), rebuilt the Ka'bah with his son Ismail, and was willing to sacrifice that son for Allah's sake. The religion of Islam traces its roots to his submission.

7. Lut (ู„ูˆุท) โ€” Covering / Protection

Nephew of Ibrahim, sent to the people of Sodom. When they refused to abandon their sins, Allah destroyed their cities.

8. Ismail (ุฅุณู…ุงุนูŠู„) โ€” God hears

Son of Ibrahim and Hajar. He helped rebuild the Ka'bah and is the ancestor of the Arab people and of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

9. Ishaq (ุฅุณุญุงู‚) โ€” He laughs / Isaac

Son of Ibrahim and Sarah, given to his aged parents as a miracle. He continued the prophetic line through his son Ya'qub.

10. Ya'qub (ูŠุนู‚ูˆุจ) โ€” He supplants / Jacob

Son of Ishaq, also called Israel. His 12 sons became the 12 tribes of Bani Israel.

11. Yusuf (ูŠูˆุณู) โ€” God increases

Son of Ya'qub, thrown into a well by his brothers, sold into slavery in Egypt, yet rose to become a great minister. His story โ€” the most complete in the Quran โ€” fills all of Surah 12.

12. Shuayb (ุดุนูŠุจ) โ€” Who shows the right path

Sent to the people of Madyan (Midian). He preached honest trade and worship of Allah alone. Identified by many with Jethro, father-in-law of Musa.

13. Ayyub (ุฃูŠูˆุจ) โ€” Returning to God

The prophet of patience. He lost his health, wealth, and family, yet never stopped praising Allah. His prayer โ€” "Adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful" โ€” is immortalised in the Quran.

14. Musa (ู…ูˆุณู‰) โ€” Drawn from the water

The most frequently mentioned prophet in the Quran (130+ times). He was raised in Pharaoh's palace, fled to Madyan, received prophethood at the burning bush, led Bani Israel out of Egypt through the parted sea, and received the Torah on Mount Sinai.

15. Haroun (ู‡ุงุฑูˆู†) โ€” Mountain of strength / Exalted

Brother and helper of Musa, appointed prophet alongside him at Musa's request.

16. Dhul-Kifl (ุฐูˆ ุงู„ูƒูู„) โ€” He of the pledge

Mentioned twice in the Quran alongside Ismail and Idris as patient and righteous. Often identified with Ezekiel.

17. Dawud (ุฏุงูˆูˆุฏ) โ€” Beloved

King and prophet, who killed Goliath (Jalut) as a youth. Allah gave him the Zabur (Psalms), made iron soft for him, and granted him a beautiful voice. Surah 34 is named Saba, associated with his era.

18. Sulayman (ุณู„ูŠู…ุงู†) โ€” Man of peace

Son of Dawud, given dominion over humans, jinn, animals, and the winds. He understood the language of birds and built magnificent structures. The Queen of Sheba (Bilqis) accepted Islam at his invitation.

Prophet to the people of Ba'albek who worshipped idols. Allah praised him: "Peace be upon Ilyas." (Quran 37:130)

20. Al-Yasa' (ุงู„ูŠุณุน) โ€” God saves

Mentioned twice in the Quran alongside Ismail, Dawud, and Sulayman as among the best people. Often identified with Elisha.

21. Yunus (ูŠูˆู†ุณ) โ€” Dove

The prophet who left his people without permission and was swallowed by a great whale. His prayer in the darkness โ€” La ilaha illa Anta, Subhanaka, inni kuntu minadh-dhalimin โ€” is the prayer of every person in difficulty. Surah 10 bears his name.

22. Zakariyya (ุฒูƒุฑูŠุง) โ€” God remembers

The guardian of Maryam. In old age, with a barren wife, he prayed to Allah for a child and was given the miracle of Yahya.

23. Yahya (ูŠุญูŠู‰) โ€” He lives / God is gracious

Son of Zakariyya, given a unique name by Allah: "We have given no one this name before." He was wise, kind, and chaste from youth.

24. Isa (ุนูŠุณู‰) โ€” God saves

Born of a virgin โ€” Maryam โ€” by Allah's word "Be!" He spoke from the cradle, healed the sick, raised the dead, and was raised to Allah before crucifixion. He will return before the Day of Judgement.

25. Muhammad (ู…ุญู…ุฏ) โ€” Praised / Praiseworthy

The seal of all prophets and the mercy to all worlds. His name is the most common name on earth. He received the Quran over 23 years and his example โ€” the Sunnah โ€” is the guide for all of humanity until the Last Day.

Naming your son after one of these prophets is a beautiful tradition. May every call of that name be a reminder of their stories of faith, patience, and submission to Allah.
